Wanggaard Officially Kicks Off 2014 Election Campaign

Former Senator Renews Vow to Focus on Jobs, Taxes and Safety

UNION GROVE – Former State Senator Van Wanggaard officially kicked off his campaign today to reclaim the 21st State Senate district for Republicans. Wanggaard launched the campaign at Nancy Washburn’s Main Street Market in Union Grove, pledging to continue his efforts to grow jobs in Southeastern Wisconsin, lower taxes, and to protect our communities and families, including victims of domestic violence.

“In my first two years in the Legislature, we made progress to grow our economy, lower taxes for all Wisconsinites, and protect victims of domestic violence,” Wanggaard said. “Unfortunately, despite all of our accomplishments, we still have progress to make in making Wisconsin the best place in the country to raise families and grow jobs.”

Since his controversial defeat in the recall elections last year, Wanggaard has been consistently approached by voters in the 21st Senate District asking him to run for the seat in the 2014 election. Wanggaard said the outpouring of support between the “old” and “new” districts has been both energizing and humbling.

“People in the district know they deserve better representation in Madison.” said Wanggaard. “Just last week, the current senator was one of 5 people in the entire legislature to vote against the bipartisan venture capital bill. His vote against nearly a billion dollars in tax relief in the state budget wasn’t surprising given he authored nearly $5 billion in higher taxes the last time he was in the Legislature. It seems he hasn’t deviated from his anti-job, high tax ways of his first term – and voters have noticed.”

Wanggaard was joined at the kick-off event by Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, showing the support of the State Senate Republicans for Wanggaard’s candidacy.

“Van was a leader in our caucus on economic development, pubic safety and victim’s rights issues, and a valuable member of our team in Madison,” Fitzgerald said. “Senate Republicans are looking forward to his return to our caucus, and giving the people of Kenosha and Racine counties the representation they deserve.”

Wanggaard was first elected to the state senate in November 2010. He was defeated in a recall election that was determined by a recount in which questionable election practices were discovered last June. Van is married to his high school sweetheart, Mary Jo, and has two grown children, Katie (Jon) and Josh (Amy). He also is the proud grandfather of a 7 month old granddaughter, Hattie Kay.

The 21st Senate District consists of most of Racine and Kenosha counties, with the exception of the city of Kenosha, and most of the city of Racine.
