Nearly $1 billion surplus found in UW System unacceptable
The Wisconsin Federation of College Republicans echoes the concerns of Gov. Walker and Republican lawmakers after a recent financial review of the UW System found a $1 billion surplus and subsequently call for a tuition freeze.
“This finding illustrates the hypocrisy numerous universities undertook when criticizing Governor Walker’s reforms,” said Tim Duffy, the chairman of the Federation. “Year after year we’ve been told cuts were being made and tuition had to increase. Now, we as college students ask for a tuition freeze like Gov. Walker until the UW System can get its financial books in order. It is not right to make the students pay more and have the money sit in an empty pot. UW-System students deserve better.”
The UW System has raised tuition by 5.5 percent for the last several years.
In a statement, Gov. Scott Walker joined in the criticisms of other Republicans and ensured a tuition freeze in the budget.
“It is very concerning to learn the UW System has been running a surplus balance of this size, especially at a time when students, families and lawmakers have continually heard from the UW System about the need for more money to offset ‘devastating cuts,’” Walker said. “At a minimum, on behalf of students and their families, I am asking legislative leaders to freeze tuition increases for two years.”
The Federation of College Republicans strongly urges lawmakers to follow suit and ensure that tuition remains the same.
“During difficult financial times, it is not only wrong, but irresponsible to ask students and families to dig deeper in their pockets when we know the resources are there, they just have to be spent wisely,” said Duffy.
