83rd Assemblyman Dave Craig on SCOTUS ruling
Government, Opinion Rep. David Craig Decries U.S. Supreme Court Decision on Obamacare
Court decision shows the law represents a tax increase, Craig says, and it undermines individual liberties.
By David Craig, June 28, 2012
Representative for the 83rd District David Craig (R-Town of Vernon) released the following statement today regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling upholding most of the provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA or ObamaCare):
“Today the Supreme Court handed down a ruling that undermines the 10th Amendment of the Constitution and the individual liberties of all our nation's citizens,” said Rep. Craig. "The Court today stood with federal government tyranny over the Constitutional principles of individual liberty and states' rights."
Craig continued, “This law was foisted upon our citizenry by a Congress and President who promised that it wasn't a tax increase. The Court today salvaged the law based on the assertion that it was a tax increase." Craig went on, "The dissent in today's decision clearly identify that the Commerce Clause has become, as forewarned by Alexander Hamilton in the Federalist Paper #33, 'the hideous monster whose devouring jaws...spare neither sex nor age, nor high nor low, nor sacred nor profane.' It is truly regrettable how far astray from the Founders’ vision for America our President and Supreme Court have taken us."
“This ruling strengthens my resolve, going forward, to continue to fight the implementation of a state run health insurance exchange as well as any other unconstitutional mandate that Washington forces upon Wisconsin,” said Craig. "Paving the way for free market reforms is the only way that government can help treat the underlying issue impacting our state and national health care system; the cost of care. More government mandates and the expansion of government will only exacerbate high health care prices for Wisconsin families already reeling from the Obama economy."
Craig helped lead the effort opposing ObamaCare implementation in Wisconsin while serving on the Assembly Committee on Insurance by fighting AB 210, a bill that would have codified the insurance regime of ObamaCare into Wisconsin law books. Craig also authored the bill to block implementation of ObamaCare's health insurance exchanges in Wisconsin.
