While the Romney campaign has not officially released its fundraising report for the month of September, a published report estimates that the GOP presidential nominee’s winning debate performance on Wednesday night has translated into a cool $12 million in online contributions.

The Wall Street Journal is also reporting that the first of three scheduled presidential debates has resulted in a surge of volunteers, larger crowds to attend one of Mitt Romney’s events on the campaign trail and more than 300,000 new friends on Facebook.

An InsiderAdvantage/Newsmax Debate Poll conducted minutes after Wednesday’s debate confirmed that most Americans agreed that Romney had won the first debate over President Barack Obama.

Asked to pick a winner on the night, 52 percent of the respondents chose Romney and 44.6 percent chose Obama.

The Romney campaign told The Journal that they saw a 63 percent increase in the number of volunteers who want to donate their time to making phone calls, going door-to-door and signing up supporters.

Moreover, Romney and vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan addressed a crowd of about 10,000 the day after the debate in Fishersville, Va., according to the report, which noted a boost from country-music star Trace Adkins and a fireworks display as part of the campaign’s new focus on large outdoor rallies.

“There was wide agreement on Thursday morning that Mitt Romney won the first presidential debate of the general election,” adds Gail Gitcho, the campaign’s communications director. “Why? Because he laid out the clear choice voters face this November between a real recovery or four more years like the last four years.”

Obama and his party Saturday reported a combined take of $181 million for September, their best fundraising month of the campaign and just short of their record of $190 million in the 2008 campaign, also in September. Romney's campaign has not released its report for the month yet.
